Dad Jokes

Teaching myself better illustration with regrettable puns.

MY ROLE

ILLUSTRATION / COPYWRITING

Problem

Being a musician, I thought illustration and User Interface Design would come easily to me. But, like most things that are worth doing in life, it was surprisingly challenging.

About half-way through my UX Design program, I realized that I simply wasn't good enough at illustration. I needed to get better at digital illustration... and fast. But how?

Hypothesis

A couple days later while I was riding my bike to clear my head, a terribly nerdy pun came to me. At first I thought 'I wonder how I could draw this joke.'

Then I thought 'I wonder if I can teach myself better visual design by illustrating my bad "Dad Jokes".' The results of this crazy idea are below:

Conclusion

The answer is yes! I got exponentially better at design by having a specific angle to study from.

By adding humor to my learning process I was able to take myself less seriously and try out new techniques without worrying about the end result.

Eventually I was able to reincorporate my new illustration skills into my UI Design process and now, what can I say, my mockups look pretty great!""

Do you have any "Dad Jokes" for me? Please send them my way. I promise I'll laugh.
